FINALS day, Sunday 7th September 2014, was completed and thanks for all the support, and also the people who helped with line judging and umpiring (and food)! It was good to see several members playing in a Club Final for the first time, many of whom were successful winners. More photos in the Gallery.
Ladies Singles – Joannah beat Isla
Mens Singles – Martin beat Tony
Ladies Doubles – Patricia/Claire beat Sue/Joannah
Mens Doubles – Tony/Paul beat Steve/Alan
Mixed Doubles – Alan/Joannah beat Iain/Winnie
The day started with the Ladies Singles between Joannah Davis and Isla Tulloch who were both playing in their first Club Final. It seemed as though they were both a little nervous in the 1st set which Joannah went on to win 6-2. The 2nd set was much closer and Isla got into the game more but was unable to stop Joannah going on to win the set 6-4 and the Ladies Singles Title this year.
This was followed by the Mens Singles which featured two players who have been in the Mens Singles Final many times over the years. Tony Denman got off to a good start and won the 1st set 6-2 but from that point on Martin Patrick settled into the match and took the 2nd set 6-3. Martin kept the pressure on in the 3rd set which he also won 6-3 and so won the Mens Singles Title for the first time since 2001.
The Ladies Doubles was a topsy turvy match with Joannah Davis and Sue Sinclair easily winning the 1st set 6-1 but then the match changed and Patricia Pollard and Claire Poulton took control to win the next two sets 6-3 6-0
Tony Denman and Paul Calcraft had control of the Mens Doubles against Steve Arnold and Alan Stacey even though they had to come from behind in the 1st set which they eventually won 6-4 followed by a 6-2 win in the 2nd set.
The last match of the afternoon was the Mixed Doubles with Joannah Davis playing in her third match of the day with Alan Swift against Winnie Fox and Iain Stewart .It was a close match but Joannah and Alan came out on top 6-3 6-4
44 Club Members attended Finals Day for some or all of the day either as a player or spectator plus many Wives, husbands, Friends, Children and Dogs! It was really a great turn out on a lovely sunny warm September day and it must have been one of the best attended Finals day for a very long time. As well as being able to play in or watch the five matches we were all able to enjoy a nice spread of food which was kindly arranged by Ann and Mick and helped by several members who kindly took the trouble to bring along a dish. And of course Monica provided the traditional Bread Pudding! It really all helped to make it a good day. A big thank you to you all.
The Tournament Winners and beaten Finalists were announced by Paul Smith, the Tournament organiser, and the Trophies were presented to them by Club Captain Mick Cox.
We have now put the Umpires Chair away for another year but Tennis has not finished just yet. Club sessions go on for a few more weeks and we have the Ann Leegood (Ladies Doubles) Tournament on Sunday 21st September 2.00 pm and the Jim & Marjorie Denman (Mixed Doubles) Tournament now on a new date of Sunday 28th September 1.00 pm so hopefully the deckchairs can come out again.
