Captain’s Comments – June 17-23

Hi Everyone, hope you are all ok and looking forward to Wimbledon. I shall be up there on Tuesday on Centre Court!

Here are a few lines about last week.

Week 10 saw the start of the reverse fixtures and we had 3 wins and 3 defeats. Hove E moved off the bottom of the table with 6pts gained against Queens D who gave us both mixed pairs and Colin Keating & Rick Potterton won 2 pts with a 6-2 6-3 victory.

Hove D had a dreadful evening away to Dyke E. All 4 pairs lost! Geoff Davies & Sharon Buxton and Jo Barton & Pauline Keating took their matches to 3 sets but we could not get a victory.

Hove C had a good 3-1 win at home to Blagss A. John Etkin-Bell & James Maddox came from behind to win the mens doubles 2-6 7-6 6-1 and Alan Stacey & Sasha Long also won in 3 sets 6-1 4-6 6-1. Carmel O’Dell & Margaret Oldfield won the 1st set tie break and then went on to win the 2nd set 6-0!

Wednesday was not a good evening. Both Hove B & Hove A lost their matches 0.5-3.5 and 1-3 respectively. Kathleen West & Suzie Holmes gained a good point for Hove B halving the ladies doubles 6-7 6-4 and Hove A gained their 2pts by way of Park Avenue conceding the ladies doubles.

Hove went to St Anne’s Wells Gardens to play Blagss on what turned out to be an awful evening to try and play Tennis. In a gale force wind and some rain we gained 5pts with Tony Denman & Lesley Clements easily winning the 1st mixed 6-1 6-0. Sarah Barr & Lou Burchill halved the ladies match 1-6 6-0 and we gained 2 more pts when Blagss conceded the 2nd mixed at the last minute. Josh Pollard & Martin Patrick battled on against the elements and their opponents to the end but lost 3-6 6-7.

It looks as though the weather may be better next week so enjoy your tennis and Wimbledon!
