Captain’s Comments – April 28 – May 4

I can do my report early this week as tonight’s match (Thursday) has been postponed, so I am sitting at home feeling lost with no tennis to go and watch!

Week 3 and once again we have been affected by the weather as tonight’s match between Hove and Queens A has been called off because of more rain….when will spring return!

On Tuesday evening we had the first inter-club match of the season between Hove E and Hove D. These matches are always keenly contested and sometimes there are some unexpected results but on this occaison Hove D won 4-0. Mick Cox and Sasha Long had a good 1st mixed match with Rick & Ann Potterton but after a close 1st set won 6-3 6-0. Brian Denman & Ann Childs came up again the strong pairing of Peter Hermann & Sharon Buxton who won the 2nd mixed. (Brian has asked me not to state the score!) Colin Keating & Brian Aldridge received a strong challenge from Ross Page & Robert Rutherford in the mens doubles but eventually won 7-5 6-2. The closest and best match of the evening was the ladies doubles between Hove E pair Joanna Barton & Monica Muschamp and the D pair of Lynn Jackson & Suzie Holmes. Monica & Jo won the 1st set tie break but then lost the 2nd 1-6. They were leading 4-2 in the 3rd but Suxie & Lynn came back to take the set and match 6-4.

Hove C played away to Dyke C but it was a disappointing evening all round losing 0-4. Dyke C had been relegated from the 2nd Division and proved just to strong.

All 4 pairs of Des O’Dell/Pam Martin, Geoff Davies/Pauline Keating, James Maddox/Dave Tulley and Carmel O’Dell/Susanna Pettit lost in 2 sets. Captain Carmel commented…”Just wait til we get them back at Hove Park with no sun in our eyes and astro courts to play on!”

Hove B played away to Blakers who had just returned from a year in the 1st division so they are no doubt a strong side. We lost both mixed pairs but they were good matches. John King & Morna Fox lost 4-6 1-6 and Matt Lea & Maddy Dunckley lost 4-6 3-6. The problem of Blakers only having 2 courts meant that James Denman & Andy Prim had little time on court. They lost the 1st set 3-6 but the match was halved in the 2nd as the light faded. We unfortunately had to concede the Ladies Doubles as this week we had a total of 8 ladies unavailable.

Hove A had a good win at home to Blakers A. There were some closely contested matches with Neil Dickson & Kathleen West winning the 1st mixed 6-3 7-5. The 2nd mixed was a quicker afair. Gary Pugh & Hilary Dewers won 6-1 6-2 in under an hour. I think Gary was in a hurry to get home to watch Tottenham on TV!

Steve Arnold & John Thrussell eventually won the mens doubles 7-6 6-4 in a tight match. Sarah Barr & Lou Burchill, two of our new members were playing there first match for the club in the ladies doubles. They did really well to come back to halve the match after losing the 1st set 3-6. They took the second set tie break 10-8 so the match finished as the light was fading and it was time to go to the pub!

Remember Club session starts at 6.00pm now so try and get along if you can.
