Captain’s Comments – April 21-27 2012

I have just returned from another good and well attended Club Session. We did not break the record set a couple of weeks ago of 32 but we had 28 this evening which is really good for a Friday. If you have not yet come to a club session please try and get along for an enjoyable evening’s Tennis.

Would all members please note and remember that from Friday 4th May Club sessions will commence at the later time of 6.00pm

And now… the full ‘Captain’s Story’ complete with, tall tales, gossip… and of course the usual retrospective weather report!

Right, let’s look back on week 2 of the League season. Once again our matches were affected by the weather. We did manage to get all 3 matches played on Tuesday and afterwards a ‘select’ band of players met in the Poets’ Corner Pub as always, to chew over the evenings events.

Hove E picked up another 4pts from their match with Hollingbury A. Colin Keating & Callum Tulley had a good victory in the Mens Doubles winning 6-1 6-4. We gained another 2pts in the 2nd Mixed when a Hollingbury A Lady said she could not continue a 3rd set with the score at 2-2 (oh the power of Hove Park!) so it was victory for Monica Muschamp and our youngest member playing his first match, Harry Pettit. Our new 6th Team Captain Ann Childs and Rick Potterton were beaten 1-6 2-6 and because of last minute withdrawals from higher teams we had to concede the Ladies.

Hove D played away at Blakers B who only have 2 courts. It turned out to be a good and bad thing. The first 2 matches on court did not go our way with Geoff Davies & Sasha Long losing 1-6 1-6 and Brian Denman and Ann Potterton also finding their opponents too strong losing 0-6 2-6. The other 2 matches were both halved because of the loss of light. Susie Holmes & Kathleen West were possibly heading for victory as the score stood at 7-5, 4-4 but Brian Aldridge and Dave Tulley were behind 5-7, 2-4 – but who could tell what might have happened!

Wednesday evening was a wash-out once again. Both matches being postponed because of heavy rain.

On Thursday our 1st team played away to Dyke A and had a very satisfying 4-0 victory. Everybody played well in some close games. Darren and Josh Pollard had a close first set but won the tie break and then went on to take the second set 6-2. Martin Patrick & Debbie Clarke were too strong for their opponents and won 6-2, 6-1. The 2nd mixed of Tony Denman and Winnie Fox had a much closer game taking the 1st set 7-5 and then having to come from 3-5 down in the 2nd set to win 7-5

The Ladies Double of Lesley Clements and Patricia Pollard was also a hard fought and close match. We won the 1st set 6-4 and then took the 2nd set tie break (7-2)

We now look forward to week 3 and lets hope that the Wednesday evening players – who have not hit a ball in anger so far – get a match and that they and the other four teams all have a good week…..enjoy your Tennis.
